Reading Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica brought back memories of my experiences with her previous books, The Good Girl and Don’t You Cry, which were filled with twists, plausible outcomes, and shocking decisions. This psychological thriller is not just a story; it’s a nuanced exploration of decision-making, motivations, and how inaction can be just as powerful as action. The writing is straightforward, with short, quick sentences that kept me fully immersed. The plot unravels slowly, and although the twist didn’t blow me away, it was realistic and gripping. The story revolves around the missing women—Meredith, Shelby, and Delilah, the six-year-old daughter—each disappearance deeply impacting the community. Listening to the audiobook, I went in blind, not having read the synopsis, which made the experience more intense. Initially thinking the book involved hikers disappearing on trails, I soon realized the real story delves into the dark secrets of a small town. What stood out most was how Kubica created a mood that’s thrilling and emotional, even if some might find her prose too stripped down. Her ability to keep the reader engaged with emotional depth and unexpected twists is truly remarkable.

The villain’s character undergoes a rapid shift, leaving the motive unclear, and the story vacillates between moments of compassion and desperation, heightening the shocks of the twists. The small town setting adds to the mysterious atmosphere, and the rain enhances the story’s intimate feel. While the twists and turns of the plot are engaging, the momentum starts to wane, leaving me wishing Delilah had a more focused, standalone book to fully explore her character. Despite some character development feeling lacking, the book remains compelling, especially for readers who enjoy multiple perspectives and a sinister undercurrent.
